Dorsal disc herniation
SPINE SURGERY
What is dorsal disc herniation?
Dorsal disc herniation is a disease of the intervertebral disc that, after undergoing a process of degeneration, protrudes into the spinal canal causing compression of the spinal cord or a nerve root.
Common symptoms
The most common symptoms of this type of hernia:
- Dorsal pain (dorsalgia) that may radiate to the intercostal region, or if there is spinal cord involvement, even to the legs.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is fundamentally clinical, supported by an imaging study, with magnetic resonance imaging being the test of choice.
Treatment is initially conservative with rest and analgesic/anti-inflammatory treatment. If after 2-3 weeks the symptomatology does not subside, surgical intervention is chosen. In our practice we opt for minimally invasive surgical techniques, which offer the least aggression to the patient and a quick recovery. The technique of choice in dorsal disc herniation is the posterior or postelateral microsurgical approach.
