Trigeminal neuralgia
BRAIN SURGERY
What is trigeminal neuralgia?
Trigeminal neuralgia is one of the most frequent and disabling types of facial pain. It is usually caused by vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve at the intracranial level.
Common symptoms
It is characterized by:
- Sudden, severe pain affecting one side of the face
- Sudden and intense pain that may radiate to the scalp, eyes, ears, nose, lips, jaw, etc.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is fundamentally clinical, supported by an imaging study, with magnetic resonance imaging being the test of choice.
Treatment is initially conservative with rest and analgesic/anti-inflammatory treatment. If after 2-3 weeks the symptomatology does not subside, surgical intervention is chosen. In our practice we opt for minimally invasive surgical techniques, which offer the least aggression to the patient and a quick recovery.
