Brain Tumors
BRAIN SURGERY
These are lesions produced by an abnormal growth of cells inside the cranial cavity. They can be extrinsic lesions, when they arise from the covering of the brain (e.g. meningiomas) or intrinsic, when they arise from the brain tissue itself (e.g. gliomas).
Common symptoms
Symptoms will depend on the nature of the injury. If the lesion is extrinsic:
- They are usually benign in nature
- Symptoms occur more slowly and are more nonspecific.
- These may include: headache, cognitive impairment, visual disturbances, hearing deficits, etc.
If the lesion is intrinsic:
- They are usually of a malignant nature
- intracranial hypertension
- They may include: vomiting, oppressive headache, poor general condition, etc.
Diagnosis
The presumptive diagnosis is radiological (brain MRI or CT) and the confirmatory diagnosis is histological (by analyzing a sample of the tumor extracted by biopsy or after surgical resection of the tumor).
The treatment of extrinsic tumors is surgical, since the nature of the lesion is benign and complete resection of the tumor achieves cure. In intrinsic tumors the treatment will depend on the area of the brain affected. Whenever possible, surgical resection, as wide as possible, will be chosen, followed by complementary oncological treatment by means of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
