Epilepsy Surgery
BRAIN SURGERY
What is epilepsy surgery?
Epilepsy surgery is an intervention that may be performed in some patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. This occurs in approximately 25% of patients with epilepsy.
Common symptoms
The symptoms of epilepsy are highly variable, depending on the area of the brain affected:
- Seizures and loss of consciousness
- Confusion, episodes of absences
- Stiffness

Diagnosis
The basis of the diagnosis of the patient with epilepsy is the neurological examination, where the physician explores, among other functions: behavior, mental function and other areas, to diagnose the condition and determine the type of epilepsy. Subsequently, a series of complementary tests are carried out, which may include brain MRI, electroencephalography (EEG), positron emission tomography (PET), among others.
The surgical treatment of epilepsy consists of removing a part of the brain tissue related to the origin of the epileptic seizures. These surgeries require a highly specialized multidisciplinary team. Technical advances in epilepsy surgery have allowed the patient to undergo surgery with minimally invasive techniques and a much shorter hospital stay.
