Cerebral Vascular Pathology
BRAIN SURGERY
What is cerebral vascular pathology?
Cerebral vascular pathology or cerebral stroke refers to a group of disorders that affect the blood vessels of the brain, being one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. It is divided into:
- Ischemic stroke: when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel in the brain, causing a cerebral infarction.
- Hemorrhagic stroke: when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and causes a cerebral hemorrhage.
Common symptoms
The symptoms of Cerebral Vascular Pathology will depend on the area of the brain affected by the stroke.
- Weakness or loss of sensation on one side of the body
- Difficulty in speaking
- Loss of vision
- Loss of consciousness

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is usually made in emergency departments, and the initial test to be performed is brain computed tomography (CT), which will determine the type of stroke. This test sometimes needs to be completed with other studies such as CT angiography or cerebral angiography.
Treatment of cerebral stroke is initially carried out in intensive care units or in specific stroke units. In some cases, the patient needs to undergo surgery, either with a decompressive craniectomy in cases of malignant ischemic stroke or by craniotomy for clipping of an aneurysm or cerebral vascular malformation in some cases of hemorrhagic stroke.
