Hydrocephalus
BRAIN SURGERY
What is hydrocephalus?
Hydrocephalus is, in essence, a potentially curable type of dementia. It is an impairment of the brain in its ability to reabsorb cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Common symptoms
The symptomatology of hydrocephalus is made up of a characteristic triad
- Gait disturbance (apraxia)
- Cognitive disorder (progressive dementia)
- Sphincter dysfunction (incontinence)

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is eminently clinical, supported by imaging tests (MRI). Sometimes, it is necessary to complete the study with some hydrodynamic tests (lumbar infusion, ICP measurement…).
The treatment of hydrocephalus is mainly surgical. The aim is to shunt the excess CSF accumulated in the intracranial compartment to another compartment. The classic procedure is the placement of a ventriculoperitoneal valve, although in recent years endoscopic techniques have been developed for the correction of some types of hydrocephalus.
