Lumbar disc herniation
SPINE SURGERY
What is lumbar disc herniation?
Lumbar disc herniation is a disease of the intervertebral disc that, after undergoing a process of degeneration, protrudes into the spinal canal causing compression of a nerve root.
Common symptoms
The most common symptoms of lumbar disc herniation:
- Sciatic or lumbosciatic pain as a result of compression of this nerve root.

Diagnosis
The diagnosis is fundamentally clinical, supported by an imaging study, with magnetic resonance imaging being the test of choice.
Treatment is initially conservative with rest and analgesic/anti-inflammatory treatment. If after 2-3 weeks the symptomatology does not subside, surgical intervention is chosen. In our practice we opt for minimally invasive surgical techniques, which offer the least aggression to the patient and a quick recovery. The technique of choice in the case of lumbar disc herniation is the microsurgical posterior tubular approach.
